Unlike DVD and CD before it, Blu-ray is built with some pretty hefty encryption designed to stop piracy. To (legally) decrypt Blu-ray movies, a programmer needs to pay exorbitant fees to Sony. Cyberlink and various other companies pay this fee, and ironically, Microsoft has to pay it for every XBox One they make. So, every Blu-ray drive for PC has to make a choice: bundle a copy of some program that owns a Blu-ray license, or just deal with only being a backup solution for a small price decrease. No Blu-ray drive is going to play Blu-ray movies out of the box. You can spend $20 or $200+, but you still need licensed software to play the movies. Unfortunately, the best choice right now is Cyberlink and their PowerDVD. Alternatively, they're *are* programs out there that let you simply copy or rip the Blu-ray, but those are of questionable legality and usually require an expensive ($100+ per year) subscription. If all you're after is something to play movies, I really just recommend a $60 4k Blu-ray player or a PS4/XBox One. PowerDVD runs $60 here in Amazon, so you'd be paying the same for a physical device as you would a piece of code. **Q: Does it work with windows 10** A: Th good news is that it works fine with Win10 and Win10 Pro. The bad news is that it is mechanically a very odd machine and difficult to use. The strange-shaped on-off switch on the back is hard to use and inconvenient. The front right corner "button" that opens-closes the disc tray is very hard to see & use, works sometimes, other times only with great difficulty. Very peculiar designed machine, and I have relegated it to a distant, seldom used #3 of my 3 Blu-ray recorder-players. **Q: Is this LibreDrive compatible?** A: Hello! Yes this Blu ray Burner Drive is compatible! I have been using it quite a bit with my Acer laptop which has MS Windows 7 Ultimate installed. At least one 3.0 Usb port OR higher is required to use the burner. The manufacturer/company is truthful about the specifications and details involved with this burner. I have used it to burn Cds, Dvds and Blu ray 25 Gig BD-R discs. I have not had any problems with this burner drive thus far and I have been using it regularly since about July-2019. Note: Do not attempt to burn any "Audio Music Cds" using speeds higher than 16x because you may get a brief "skip" on one of your Cd tracks. For burning data-only Cds and Dvds you maybe able to select higher speeds like 32x with the burning software and not have to worry too much about data integrity problems. For optimum quality use the 16x or lower rating on all disc types! *Note: There is NO support for being upward compatible with 4K-UHD burning software or 4K-UHD discs. I tested this with music CD's, DVD's, and Blu-Ray discs and it was able to play all of them perfectly fine. Quality of course was limited to the disc quality itself, like in the case of DVD's that are older. The main issue I had with setting up the drive was that it's not truly "plug-and-play," meaning that a true "plug-and-play" is literally plug in and on and ready to go. I wasn't used to an added power switch on this but once I found that on the back and turned it on a few seconds into the setup everything was good. I am the type of user that won't use that switch beyond making sure it's powered on. This doesn't play 4K discs out of the box, but I've seen online how you can hack it to, but I have zero interest in hacking my device, nor worrying about buying 4k discs. I got this specifically for Blu-Ray movies that I already own along with a few DVD's and music CD's. Now the reason I took one star off the review. They created this reason in their bundled software choice that was clearly chosen because it was cheap for them to license without truly caring if you received current software relevant to current computer hardware and operating systems. Power2Go 8 is dated as released November 3, 2011, CyberLink PowerBackup 2.6 is dated as released October 29, 2014, and Nero BackItUp 2017 Essentials was clearly released in 2017. I'm honestly just annoyed that they provided software from 2011, 2014, and 2017 for a product I just purchased yesterday, December 29, 2025. All of this software is genuinely old and outdated. Power2Go 13, the latest version from Cyberlink was released in 2019, and even that is starting to show its age, but that is the current offered version from Cyberlink. So my take is, enjoy the drive for being great hardware, but ignore the disc that comes with it completely and find more relevant and current solutions. I think that this fact also should mandate that they drop the product price, because being realistic, they are only offering hardware with outdated software that "functions" but isn't at all coded properly for current windows or macs, hardware or operating systems, let alone security risks. I already own the PowerDVD 24 software for playing discs as I already have a DVD external drive that's held up very great. So adding this drive into that software is already super easy for playback. As for a burning solution that I can count on getting updated I'm going to go with Cyberlink's Power2Go 13. I'm annoyed that I have to buy current software for a product I purchased yesterday. I also feel like they are pricing this for 4K use knowing a lot of users probably will hack it to make it work for that. However that is also unfair pricing for those of us genuinely just wanting a quality player that isn't crazy priced like this one is, and especially since it isn't set up for 4k as purchased. In the end I'm glad I have this, but it's is significantly over-priced. I haven't had this long enough to speak to how durable it is, but for what I've tested so far it seems reliable.
