I have what looks to be a Shimano Altus long cage on the bike and was able to get it to work by replacing the b-screw with a longer one. The installation was a breeze no problems everything lined up just had to adjust the B screw so the derailleur could go onto the 40t sprocket. The shifters and derailleurs will move the same amount for each shift, but only move a set number of increments for index shifting. So long as you set the limits you don't have to remove any cogs you just won't reach them if your shifter has a smaller number of index increments than the cassette has cogs. Use your limit screws to ignore one end or the other of the gear range. The 7-speed freehub body is too narrow to receive all eight cogs so you could remove the 3rd or 4th Cog if the cassette is not riveted together or riveted to splined carriers. That would give you a 7 speed wide range cassette with a larger jump to the easy side Midway up the cassette what would otherwise perform just fine. The only catch would be if the rear derailleur didn't have the range or reach for a huge rear COG I think the largest you could get away with is likely a 40 tooth first gear. Utility/economical 1x opportunity. *by M***K on June 30, 2022* Got an old 99 GT Palomar for next to nothing to haul the kids in the trailer. Bottom of their line with twist shifters. Problem is while taking the boys on an adventure sometimes you need to hold a big old Chick-fil-A cup in one hand while you pedal and manage hills etc. So I got a 26” wheel with HG hub from the coop, put a Wolf Tooth road link on the rear derailleur, removed both old shifters, got a new 8 speed shifter and this cassette, and took off front derailleur. Using the middle ring (28/38/48) this thing has slightly better climbing gear than the old 28:28 ratio AND slightly better top gear with 38:11 than the former best 48:14.
