Review: Handrail Project - My newly installed metal handrails (in March, 2016) have already showing sign of rusting. So, I searched online to find some paints that can protect the handrails and can last a long time without redoing it every 2 or so years. Then I found Rust Bullet products and decided to give a try. I must say the price is not cheap as you could find in local store or big box chain stores (Home depot or Loews). I applied products to my hand-rails in the front porch about a month ago and then in my backyard hand-rails 3 days ago. I prepared the surface of hand rails according to the instruction by lightly sanding it and then wiping clean with tag cloth. I then coated rails with Rust Bullet Standard Industrial Strength Rust Inhibitor. 6 hours later I applied it with second coat of Rust Inhibitor. After another 8 hours, I top-coated with Rust Bullet BlackShell Rust Preventative. So far, it holds up pretty good. It was better than I expected. But, I won't really know until 1 year from know. The only thing I don't like it is that it dries up pretty fast even in 70 degrees temperature. So, I have to pull out a small portion each time and used a lot, a lot of paint brushes. As paint dries up on the brush, it become useless and need a new brush to continue the job.

**Q: what is the heat tollerance? Can it be used to coat exhaust pipes for diesel generators?**
A: Hi Trevor:
We would strongly recommend your logging on to www.rustbullet.com to view and print the Application Guidelines. I have attached the Air Temps and Application Temps from them, below.
Recommended air or surface temperature should not be below 35°F (2°C) or above 110°F (43°C). Ideal application temperature is between 50°F
(10°C) and 80°F (27°C) with humidity below 90%. Never apply a Rust Bullet coating while raining or under threat of rain. Do not apply to surfaces
when existing temperature of the surface exceeds 190°F (90°C) or is below 32°F (0°C). After fully cured, Rust Bullet coatings have a service
temperature range of 314°F (157°C) continuous, and can tolerate maximum temperature between 617°F - 662°F (325°C – 350°C) for up to 72 hours.
You would of course need to have check the temps of your Mufflers to make sure they work with our temps.

**Q: Can this be used to coat Marine Oil Pans on the inside as well as the outside?**
A: would  not paint on the inside of the oil pan. don't care how clean u think it is. when it starts to flake and clogges up the oil pick up and ruins the engine just coat the outside the oil in the pan will take care of the rust inside the pan.

**Q: What's the difference between this product and rust bullet's 'automotive' version rba49?**
A: Rust Bullet Automotive is formulated a bit thinner than the Rust Bullet Standard Formula to easily flow through an HVLP auto finishing spray system. Rust Bullet Automotive has more metal and will produce a smoother finish typically desired for automotive projects. Both Rust Bullet and Rust Bullet Automotive are industrial strength rust inhibitive coatings. They have the same patented anti-corrosive properties.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works better than the automotive version when brushing on.

I think this works better than the normal automotive version of rust bullet when brushed on. I can't speak about spray applications as I've never applied it that way. If you want to extend its shelf life after opening use an inert gas like Argon to displace the oxygen. Take out what you need, carefully wipe the can and lid and flood the can with Argon then replace the lid. Bloxigen was recommended but if you already have it welding Argon is so much cheaper. Here it is March 2026 and the product is still is liquid. I can't state it enough. Open the can, take out what you need, clean the cans sealing surfaces, fill the empty space with Argon and seal the can right away. The way I figure it, this will still be usable for another year.
