Review: Delicious Alternative to Matcha - This Hojicha is a nice alternative to matcha, whether you are looking for a different taste or a less expensive option. It has a nice roasted smell and a well rounded taste; kind of like chocolate. It is less grassy than matcha, so I suspect it has potential to become quite popular. I've tried it hot and cold and prepare it just like matcha. My preferred recipe is 1tsp of Hojicha powder, 2 tsp of brown sugar, and 1 cup of milk. Mix the Hojicha and brown sugar in a small amount of warm water (1/8th of a cut) and then pour into a glass of milk. If you drink it hot, you can skip water and mix it directly into your milk. I use an electric milk frother instead of the traditional whisk. It blends in every nicely and creates a smooth texture. I like to store this product sealed in the freezer, this helps it retain color and flavor.
Review: Good option for hojicha powder for making lattes - As a fan of hojicha lattes, it is already difficult to find cafes that offer such drinks. Therefore, I took a gander at desertcart to look for hojicha powder, as I have the capabilities to make them at home, and I enjoy the process as well. I purchased the 50 g Jade Leaf Barista Hojicha Powder bag to make hojicha lattes, which cost me $9.95. Hojicha, being roasted green tea leaves, yields a nuttier, earthy taste with a deeper roasted flavor compared to ceremonial matcha powder I've bought from Japan. The powder is ground very finely and doesn't require sifting, which is especially helpful when using the traditional method of mixing with a bamboo chasen whisk. The powder dissolves into hot water well and is a good pairing with milk or other milk alternatives such as oat or almond milk. The bag claims a single shot of hojicha is at a serving size of 1 gram (1/2 teaspoon) and 2 grams (1 teaspoon) for a double shot serving. I personally prefer a really rich hojicha flavor, so I use 4 grams (2 teaspoons), essentially a quadruple shot. Even if I will eventually finish the bag quicker, the higher intensity of flavor is something I enjoy more. In that case, the 50g/1.76 oz bag yields me about 12.5 servings. At $9.95, each serving of 4 grams/2 teaspoons costs me roughly $1.25. Considering the added cost of milk/milk alternatives, each latte I've made is about $2-$3, which is much more economical than paying $5-$7 for a hojicha latte from local cafes. I would recommend this powder to those interested in trying out hojicha as it does have the rich, deeply flavored and slightly roasted hojicha flavor I expect, but at a cheaper cost and better flavor than the few cafes that actually offer hojicha lattes. Overall, this product carries its value well, as it is both delicious and friendly to the wallet. Given this positive experience, I do plan on purchasing their Teahouse line of hojicha powder, as Jade Leaf claims on their website that the Teahouse variant is of a higher quality than their Barista powder.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Has it been tested for radiation?**
A: Absolutely -- our partner farm conducts regular lab tests on the soil, water, and plants to ensure our Matcha is 100% safe to consume, in addition to lab tests performed on the final product that we import (ensuring that not only is there no radiation concern, but also that no heavy metals or other contaminants are present). Product safety is the most important issue for Jade Leaf Organics, and we take every precaution to ensure it. The Uji, Kyoto region where our Matcha is sourced is very far south of the site of the Fukushima incident in 2011, one of the furthest growing regions from the location of the incident, and detailed soil and plant analyses conducted even the year of the disaster showed no signs of radiation contamination. To be clear, our growing region was NEVER affected by the incident. Now, 4 years later, Japan has since lifted all restrictions on crops (even ones grown near Fukushima). Please let us know if there is any other information we can provide...we're here to help.Emma LeeJade Leaf Organics

**Q: Does this have caffeine in it? Thanks.**
A: Yes it does! Each half-teaspoon (1 gram) serving of Matcha contains roughly 25-35mg of caffeine, which is approximately one-third the caffeine of a cup of brewed coffee. Matcha is easily tolerated by many people for whom coffee makes them jittery because all of the other components that make up Matcha in effect slow down the release of caffeine into the body. It typically takes a good three to six hours for this minimal amount of caffeine to be absorbed into the bloodstream, and yet the mindfulness effects are apparent almost immediately upon drinking it.In other words, Matcha doesn't make you feel jittery or wired like coffee can tend to -- it can actually help you relax.Great question Yani - thanks so much for writing in! **Q: Is this tea tested for lead and other heavy metals? Have any traces been detected?**
A: Absolutely. Each crop is tested for contaminants by the farms, and then we test the imported matcha using two independent laboratories here in the U.S. -- Anresco Laboratories and Certified Laboratories. The most recent reported levels were no lead detected below the detection limit of 1ppm (part per million). We additionally test for the full spectrum of common heavy metals (Arsenic, Cadmium, and Mercury) as well as Fluoride, and similarly these were not detected below the detection limit of 1ppm.We additionally have the labs perform radiation tests and use a gross Alpha/Beta/Gamma test that comprehensively detects radiation contamination (as opposed to testing for just the most common radioactive isotopes, which is all most brands do). All crops have passed these tests with no traces of contamination.Great question -- safety of our products is a top priority of ours. Happy to answer any other questions! -EmmaEmma LeeCustomer HappinessJade Leaf Organics

**Q: Is it sweetened?**
A: No, there is absolutely nothing added...each bag contains 100% USDA Organic, all natural, stone ground matcha green tea powder :) You can certainly sweeten it up though with the sweetener of your choice! Many of our customers prefer it that way in their lattes and smoothies.Great question Larissa - thanks so much for writing in! ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ did not expect the flavor
*by I***A on June 23, 2026*

it's not a bad flavor but it's not one i would gravitate towards first if i wanted a drink. flavor is what is described and i made a few drinks with it that were really good! it works best with more "warm" or chocolaty flavors. it works the same as matcha, but has a much warmer (?) taste. i can't really describe it. it's between smoky and fried, but not in a burnt way. it's pretty good if that's what flavors you like. i think the best way to describe it is roasted.
