The upper part ("plates" that hold the gears and attach to the handles) are kind of shiny for stainless and look like some kind of plated metal- they are shiny like chrome, and very solid. I do not see any evidence of rusting on the gears or anywhere after a few months of use. This device works great. **Q: Is this designed to pierce the top of the can like the typical "old school" can opener such as a swing-a-way?** A: Yes, it pierces the top of the can but it does it very close to the edge so that virtually no sharp edge is left on the can. The lid is removed and discarded and its edge is quite sharp. This is not a safe-edge opener such as the "Good Cook Classic 4 in 1 Can Opener". **Q: Are the handles full tang or is each handle separately joined to the opener part?** A: Chris, the handles as you see in the pic are separate and are joined to the oper part. This is a very efficient and easy to use hand can opener. Also the turning piece is soft to use especially if you need it. It opens the with not effort. I highly recommended. I do not let anybody else use it...it is mine... :) **Q: Will this handle large size number 10 cans? The industrial size ones for emergencies. Thanks** A: Yes it does a good job for me. I open jumbo sized cans quite often for special recipes that require quantities of certain canned vegetables. The best help to get the larger cans opened smoothly are the excellent grip you can get on the stainless steel handles. I was contacted by Keetzen with a very nice apology that stated I must have received a defective opener, so they promptly shipped me a 2nd opener at no charge. Upon arrival, I tried out the new opener and it works exactly the same as 1st opener. Both are pretty nice, but don't deliver on the "no sharp edges" claim. Like most hand can openers, they both leave a small sharp edge wherever it finishes opening the lid.I wanted to love this can opener. My electric opener needed replaced and I wanted to free up some counter space so I searched Amazon for hand can openers. I wanted an easy to use, heavy duty opener as it will be used daily. I was drawn to the openers boasting "no sharp edges left on cans" as my kids often open cans and have been cut a few times. I could have ordered the leading 5* brand that is only half the cost, but I decided to pay extra for the smooth edges this one is supposed to deliver. My Keetzen arrived quickly (I have Prime). I pulled it out of the box to check it out, and honestly it looks like a nice opener. The mechanism is weighty but the handles are very light. I decided to try it out right away. It was pretty easy to attach to the can and the knob turned fairly easily. The problem is that it's just a regular can opener. It left sharp, jagged edges on the lid like every other can opener I've ever owned. I have no idea why it advertises "no sharp edges" or why only one or 2 other reviews mention this. I tried it several times and each time was the same result. If you look closely at my photo you can see a sharp piece of metal sticking out.
