This changes the gear ratio for the door AC/Heater blend door so that the shaft does not break if you get the next one replaced. I was able to replace these gears myself with just a cross tip screwdriver. To fix the shaft you would need the entire kit that the control nobs fit on. That kit from my research can cost from $120 - $400. I had mine replaced by a repair shop and paid $400 with labor.
