Having the zipper run the entire length works great, much easier to load and find what you are looking for. I also found them handy to pack other things in, makeup, socks, sewing items. Only con is they are solid black, you can't see what is inside. **Q: Are these machine washable?** A: Yes, I machine washed these on cold. I used the gentle cycle with a slow spin (no need for a faster spin, as the fabric is nylon). After washing, I turned them inside out and hung them up to dry. But you could probably just leave right side out and lay flat or hang. Oh, and since they are water resistant, I did open the zippers partially for the wash cycle so the water could get in to wash the inside.
