Attached the outdoor thermometer outside my back door - and the inside unit is magnetized and is on my refrigerator. The distance is only about 40 feet so I cannot say if it would work at 500 ft. It seems to work well but since my outdoor unit catches the evening sunset, the temperature is higher than my weather app on my phone. It came with the batteries provided and worked as soon as I installed them. The Display is nice and bright and I have not had any glitches in the connection even when the weather/wind was strong or harsh. It appears you can synch up to 3 devices to the unit which would be nice to see how your heat/AC units work within your home but I only needed one. Also - it was a little confusing that the marketing for this thermometer mentioned “humidity sensor”. There is no humidity reading - just the outdoor and indoor temps.
