It does both reliably. A single pair of rechargeable AA batteries lasts for better part of a year. I tried another brand prior and it required near monthly battery replacements and stopped working after a year or two. The first Zulay mixer worked for 5-6 years, which would have been satisfactory for 15$ gadget that is exposed to liquid and the occasional knock, but I contacted customer service and they’re sending a replacement.
