I've only used the mascara brush so can't speak for the brushes. No special routine, I just apply in the evening after my make-up is off and my face is clean, head to bed and wash off in the a.m. The only issue I've had, is that it is pretty thick and there's been a few times where it's gotten a bit 'gobby' and I've only had to continually run the brush through it and that pretty much takes care of it.
