I used thin sheets of plexiglass as side inserts after cutting a small groove down the middle. Very solid wood and held up under the construction process. I was able to drill into them in order to use screws but they can shatter a bit where the drill bit exits so just something to keep in mind. Using a finish nail gun works much better. You need to get treated wood from hardware. **Q: Are these wood rods weather proof?** A: No, these are raw wood If yu properly treated them they may hold up. They are really for crafting. **Q: I'm thinking of cutting these up into cubes and glueing them together horizontally to make a cutting board. Think these will hold up to the abuse?** A: I would not recommend. First. This is only 1/2 thick, even though you glue them up, I doubt the cross cut will hold up. Second, thus us soft wood. I glued them to the particleboard of my kitchen cupboard, because the little plastic clips kept failing under the weight of the cans.
