Those methods ought to be workable even if the hardware is wet. This fills the bill for one such means in a very compact, yet effective, package. There is room for a small amount of tinder material (e.g. a tuft of cotton soaked with petroleum jelley) in the compartment that covers the striker. One should also carry alternate means of fire starting, such as a good butane lighter, waterproof matches, etc. The device is very well made, easily carried in a pocket or attached to an article of clothing or gear, and simple to use if appropriate tinder is secured. One ought to have experience, or at least practice, strating a fire using a sparking device to be effective in using this product. It is much easier than traditional flint and steel, but quite a bit more difficult to use than a match or a lighter. However, it has no moving parts and is therefore very reliable.. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice size and well made *by on Reviewed in the United States October 9, 2013* This is a nicely made product. The threads and rubber gaskets are nicely fit, and smooth. The sparks it gives off are very hot. I grabbed some lint from my dryer, put it outside on the steps (NOT in by bedroom like guy in the other review, lol) and hit it once and it lit up immediately. Obviously you need to find some tinder for best performance. The XL is about the width of a rubberized pen, and perhaps half the length. I would only get the regular version if you were putting it on a keychain and really wanted to smallest available, otherwise go for the XL, nice size in the hand and 3000 strikes vs. 1000 for the regular. The engineering on these is really well done. I got the orange, which is more subtle than I expected, but looks very good. Overall, I rate this a 5.0 out of 5.0 stars.Posititves:- Very small and compact. This is almost the size of half a pencil.- It is lightweight considering its solid, aluminum construction.- Construction is top notch, durable, and consistent. Bought several of these from different sellers and quality on all has been great.- The firesteel is housed in a water-tight seal.- The firesteel is replaceable.Negatives:- This does not apply to me, but for people with poor dexterity or extra large hands, it may be too compact to use efficiently.In summary, I love these Exotac Nanostiker XL tools. They are my favorite fire starters that I save in case of an emergency. I also have several of the Swedish Firesteels as well. One of them was exposed to water disinfectant and started to corrode. Unfortunately, there is no waterproof housing on that one.
