You have to go deep into the Google search results to find people who have glued or replaced the plastic gear and resolved the error only to have it recur with the gear on the other side of the shaft. The robot mechanism is used many tape libraries from major brands HP, Dell, IBM, Quantum and more. I have five of these units all at a similar age so I was determined not to throw away hundreds of parts to fix what must be a common point of failure (a tiny plastic gear under stress). Initially I was looking at brass rods but I went stainless steel for strength because I reduced the shaft size 1mm to allow me to have a little more material on the pinion gear hub for durability. It's been a couple of weeks and hundreds of tape changes, I will update if anything changes but so far these are handling the stress and torque well and the machine is functioning 100%.
