Anyone (like Northern Tool) who who tells you that you can put in the same size log as the inside diameter has never actually used it. **Q: Wonderful kindling crackers, can you tell me whether a 3 lb or 4 lb hammer is best if a woman or teenager is using it? I'd love your input!** A: 1) If you're putting medium-sized pieces of firewood into it to create smaller pieces or kindling, then the 3 lb. will work fine. 2) If you want to break FAT chunky pieces (e.g., thick diameter) of firewood into smaller pieces of firewood, it won't work well. (I just tried mine out for first time. I had to whack it around 40+ times or more to get it to start to split.) Much safer than splitting with a hatchet. *by H***T on May 15, 2019* If you use wood heat in the winter, you're always in need of kindling with as little fuss and personal hazard as possible. In this device the sharp splitting edge is protected by a sturdy frame and the only moving part is your 3-pound mechanic's hammer. Splits most wood better than what I was using before- a razor sharp hatchet and chopping block, and a steady aim. The number of firewood pieces that go flying is far less, and that's important because I split kindling inside next to my stove on one side of the room, with windows, lamps, etc all around. Accidents can happen when you're rushed and perhaps fatigued from a day's hard work, and using techniques that require a sharp edge and precise aim in order to avoid severe self-injury. This keeps you out of the way of the edges and safely channels the split wood downward to the floor. I would keep your chopping block as a base, perhaps using the mounting holes to screw it down. Very fine splitting can be done putting the small stick to be resplit close to one side and avoiding the large wedge in the middle-if you want that you should mount the splitter with one post as close to the edge of the stump as you can, so that you can feed the halves through the frame and out next to the edge of your stump. I would be a lot happier letting my 10 year old girl use this to split kindling rather than giving her the best hatchet made to do the job. After using this for a heating season, the kindling cracker shows no detectable wear. The only limitation comes from the size of the top ring- fits most, but not the largest chunks coming from the woodpile. So get the larger ring size and get a bit more capacity.
