All the speakers worked, included the rear 2 which are in an overhead housing, which were not working before. This wiring harness plugs into the car (more precisely, the plug inside the dashboard which goes to the car), and the wire ends attach to the wire ends of the new car stereo. Color coding is standardized for the wires, so I just had to connect all the wires to the corresponding wire ends on the plug that came with the new stereo. To connect the stripped wire ends, I used crimp connectors and a crimping tool. Other options include twisting the wire ends together and covering with electrical tape, or using twist-on wire caps.
