This effect may be different for someone with lighter colored hair or lashes. My own eye lashes are dark, the tips are light. It is only evident that they are long when I have mascara on. This mascara builds nicely as well. I will not miss using Maybelline at all. Although Maybelline is a cheaper brand, it was what worked well for me. I have tried many other brands. I wish I'd known that, but like another reviewer has mentioned, knowing ahead of time that this mascara is not waterproof/smudgeproof might help you appreciate the positives.
