This was a gift from my wife so I am writing this through her account. I already reviewed the 8" from GK&CO and thought it was a wonderful beautiful and well crafted knife so the wife followed up with the purchase of this one. If I am going to do a review though that may influence other peoples purchase I want to be honest. When I received the first one it had an odd shiny area on the blade just in front of the grip that ran the full width of the blade and about 3 inches long. The rest of the blade was a kind of grey color. The shinny area was obviously done with a grinder. When I received my 8" I was so pleasantly surprised because I thought it would be kind of raw and need work but upon receiving it I was pleasantly surprised at how well it was crafted so I knew I could expect more. This one will be used and not a wall hanger so differences in color werent an issue, being a bit more unfinished than my 8" want an issue. The blade like my 8" arrived sharp! After cleaning off the shipping goop and marveling at the heft and balance I took a closer look at the shinny area. Lo and behold there appeared to be cracks in the blade. I have owned many a hand forged knife by American makers and thought the marks might just be forging marks but looking closer they were cracks. The blade, being so thick, didnt seem as if the cracks came out of the other side but they were most definitely cracks and not forge marks and the maker, I suspect, tried to grind them out hence the shinny ground area. So why 5 stars? Thankfully these were desertcart Prime and after I vacillated about whether or not to just keep it we decided to just send it back. I was so impressed with my 8" I just asked for a replacement since any company can have a misfit get through. The 5 stars is for the replacement. This one was every bit as nice as the 8" I received. The wood scales might have been a little nicer actually .. Maybe. This one came and was again just more than I expected especially at that price point. After cleaning the goop off the replacement I was thrilled to see the fit and finish was beautiful. I wouldnt need to do any clean up work as it was beautiful and ready to go. I did all the same small tests I did with its smaller brother by whacking at a tree limb, chopping at an old hard 2x4, shaving as if you used a draw knife, cutting through rope and it kept its edge. I put it to a soft wheel with some rouge and man oh man does it take a nice edge. The scales are gorgeous and on this example there was no gaps between the scales and blade and I was surprised and pleased to see a tapered tang. Most importantly the blade was perfect. The kukri, while heavy, must have magic because it doesnt really feel heavy due to its great balance. The sheath had a beautifully patterned leather so this could be used as a wall hanger but what a shame it would be not to use it. So in the end .. check your Kukri out well. If its some issues with the wood fit .. come on its a tool don't be so sensitive but .. look closely at the blade as my cracks were at the thinnest area of the blade and might have been a problem. I am going to chalk that one up to a product that slipped through and whole heartedly recommend this kukri as a beautiful and very functional tool worth every penny of what I paid for it. Also there are usually two types of hilt, Panawal with a full width extension of the steel blade or Parawal with a narrower steel hilt extension encased in the wood.
