It could possibility sew through 2 layers of canvas with the correct needle but that is about as heavy as it could take. I have no problem sewing up to 3 layers of denim or 2 layers of upholstery vinyl, but heavier items could damage the machine. It is a wonderful little machine that I use 6-8 hours daily but really not designed for industrial sewing of heavy utility fabrics. **Q: Can I use my metal bobbins in my machine or do I need to use the plastic ones?** A: All top load machines use plastic bobbins except for older early singers with metal bobbin case,there is a magnetic ring attached to the hook center that holds the plastic bobbin case from rattling and to slow its movement, if you use metal bobbins they become held by the magnetic transfer through the bobbin case floor (metal) and limit or restrict bobbin rotation,if you remove the magnet you can use the metal bobbins,however it will be noisey and excelarate wear on the bobbin case **Q: does this machine have foot pedal?** A: It does have a foot pedal which is on the short side but I have it anchored on a wood flooring sample with double sided tape. That solves the problem of it not quite reaching the floor, and because the pedal is light as a feather it was always turned around, upside down or on it’s side when I went to step on it but not now. **Q: can a beginner use this machine.. i am thinking about the speed** A: Yes - This is one of the easiest machines to use. You will get used to the foot pedal very fast to control the speed. I have given several of these machines away as presents. I also keep two of these machines at all times.They get used of leather work, quilting and wearable art such as jackets and shirts.
