We have found the oral irrigator to be extremely effective in cleaning the gum line of plaque and tartar. If you are using a Waterpik wp-100 or Aquarius, the reservoir holds about 2 cups of water. The typical recommended dose is 1 scoop (1/4 teaspoon) per cup of water. If you are just getting started, we often recommend doubling that dose for the first two weeks then backing off to the one scoop per cup ( 2 scoops in the reservoir). Remember as you use the waterpik, the goal is to irrigate the gum/tooth margin. Start with a mid to low setting to avoid using up the mixture too quickly and systematically irrigate all quadrants. Pay special attention to rear molars that are often missed. Once you have completed all quadrants you can focus any remaining solution to trouble spots are any deep pockets. It has no ability to reduce tartar buildup. Periogen on the other hand contains a pyrophosphate (food salt) that is a proven anti calculus agent in conjunction with a polysulphate (food salt) . Together when applied in a healthy oral pH environment (around 7.6 ph) they act as a tartar reducing agent with superior anti-plaque qualities to just baking soda. Is it white in color or dark from smoking or other factors? Periogen works very well with whitish tartar applied via an oral irrigator such as a Waterpik WP-100. While it is difficult to give you a definitive answer to your question, we stand behind our product and given the Amazon return policy, it maybe worth it for you to try Periogen.
