This product encases the entire mattress. I had an unplanned test yesterday with one of my pups and I was amazed. As I quickly stripped the bed and planned to do the same with this cover, I realized I could wipe the cover down and optionally wash. I verified that no moisture penetrated the cover to the mattress - the mattress was "bone dry". This is like a second (waterproof) skin to your mattress, it is seamless to the bed. Since this encases the mattress, I do recommend 2 people to cover larger mattresses. I was able to do this solo on a Cal King but it took a bit. I found starting the cover at the end of the mattress and moving up worked best.
