All I know for sure is the can states this: "CONTAINS: Isobutane, 1,1-Difluoroethane", both of which might be petroleum-based...maybe! but I am not a chemist so don't buy my petroleum-based guess. However, do follow all the precautions on the can...some would never pay attention to warnings on purchased products, but I do because I value my health. Scotchgard is definitely chemically-based; there would not be precautions on the can if it was completely safe to use.
