Mine came in without a smell, but I suggest maybe using downy mixed in with some water in a spray bottle and spray down the dresser and let it capture the smell of the softener. You can also try sprinkling some baking soda and leaving it in for a day then vacuuming it out BEFORE placing your clothes/things.
