When we assemble the digital caliper, the ZERO line on the printed scale SHOULD NOT line up with the JAW line. It should line up/under the left side of the black plastic vernier cover. This digital caliper thumb wheel is designed to be loose so that it will hang on the plastic hook when not in use. This can eliminate the friction between the body/beam and the wheel, and give better movement. When doing the adjustment, just push/press the wheel toward the beam, then move back and forth to adjust. When the display numbers are blinking/flashing, please take out the old battery and install a new battery. I want one too round to a reasonable fraction for quick drill selection.** A: I keep another set that does 64ths for wuickly measuring hex wrenches and drill bits. This caliper is useless if you have an unmarked hex wrench pile and want to quickly find the right one. Math is easy enough, but a pain when you're in a hurry. If you have the data cable, you can use excel on your computer to round to nearest useful fraction. This really is a design flaw in my opinion because you dont use fractions for precision...you would be in decimal mode. You only use fractions for practical stuff like finding the 3/16 or 5/32 drill bit or hex wrench. Nobody is using fractions past 64th in the real world...they almost always move over to decimals after 64ths. **Q: When it's closed, should it read zero? Mine shows a negative** A: If you open the jaws and happen to press the zero button it will measure from that point. If you then close the jaws past the point where you pressed the zero button, it will read in the negative because you went passed that point of zero.
