## Description

The Cyalume SnapLight is a red industrial grade light stick measuring 6" long, for providing instant 360 degree illumination, that can be seen up to a mile away for up to 12 hours in optimal conditions. The SnapLight is waterproof, non-toxic, and non-flammable. To activate the light stick, bend, snap and shake the tube. The light stick has a hook and gate top, for hanging or attaching the light. Each light stick is individually foil-wrapped for protection from light and moisture, and has up to a five-year shelf life from date of manufacture. The durable, waterproof, external body of the light stick is made from low density polyethylene (LDPE), and is phthalate * for safety. The internal illuminating substance is non-toxic and non-flammable, and the components of the light stick are recyclable. The light stick floats in water and works best between 40 to 80 degrees F (4 to 27 degrees C), and although the light stick works at higher or lower temperatures, it is less effective in colder temperatures. All sticks are tested at a temperature of 72 degrees F (22 degrees C) to determine the illumination duration. Each 10-degree C (50-degree F) increase or decrease in temperature doubles or halves the reaction rate, and therefore the brightness and duration. For example, the same light stick that emits approximately 30 lux (a unit that describes how much light is visible over a square meter) at 15 minutes after activation at 24 degrees C (75 degrees F) will be half as bright but glow twice as long at 14 degrees C (57 degrees F). At 34 degrees C (93 degrees F), the same light stick would be twice as bright, but glow half as long. Storage at elevated temperatures (above 120 degrees F or 49 degrees C) will decrease shelf life and start to soften the plastic tube, and increase the risk of a leak. Review: I see way too many negative comments thinking these are glow sticks for the 4th of July type events especially reviews about the red sticks. THESE ARE MEANT TO EMIT VERY LITTLE LIGHT FOR A REASON, red light is easier on the eyes which when walking around at night it means you keep more of your ability to see at night. These aren’t meant to be a significant source of light, the best uses for these are reading at night or seeing around inside your tent. Again these are not meant to be bright on purpose, please understand when buying that these are mainly meant for survival/camping and emergencies not for children to play with.

**Q: what color is best**
A: Depends on your use... for brightness, without a doubt green. 2 reasons to get technical, first the chemical make up allows that color to glow brightest, and second is that the human eye sees this color better than any other light wavelength. If you're looking for "flares" though and need red, your best bet would be a strobe light. The red snap lights are good for low-light needs (hence using red lens flashlights in the military to read maps as the human eye doesn't pick this light up at low levels), but nowhere near what you would need for safety. Blues and whites are in the middle but don't nearly as long -better off with a LED flashlight. Go green...

**Q: Can they be stored in freezing temps in a car?  Gets Brutal in NY in the winter**
A: they can be stored in the car and they will not freeze

**Q: Is the shape like an octagon to avoid rolling on a flat surface?**
A: Seems to not roll due to flat sealed end not to say it would not roll on a steep incline hope this helps

**Q: Are these Coast Guard approved instead of light them up flares?**
A: I can't give you any kind of legal advice ("...approved by Coast Guard..."), but I'd suggest to you that the soft and gentle glow of a Cyalume Stick would be quite close to useless if you were stranded out on the water and were waiting for the Coast Guard - anyone - to find you.

THESE ARE MEANT TO EMIT VERY LITTLE LIGHT FOR A REASON, red light is easier on the eyes which when walking around at night it means you keep more of your ability to see at night. These aren’t meant to be a significant source of light, the best uses for these are reading at night or seeing around inside your tent.
