Online forums such as mytreg.com have revealed potential for water to enter the air intake box, soaking the paper air filter, and in some cases leading to paper particles being ingested into the engine, destroying turbos, and even causing engine hydro-locking. The design of the main air intake, and possible blockage of two water drains, is the main issue. Regular checking and clearing the water drains is one way to prevent such damage, but additional protection can be gained by using a paperless air filter that is impervious to water damage, and can also be cleaned/reused. I'm not personally convinced of performance advantages from such filters, but in this case the safety factor is more important. This AEM filter is a development of the well-known K&N brand, but doesn't require re-oiling after cleaning - a potential for damage to MAF sensors if done incorrectly.
