## Description

Nutricost combines two of the body's most important building blocks into one easy-to-take supplement. The amino acid's: L-Arginine and L-Ornithine. L-arginine and L-ornithine, or simply arginine and ornithine, are two amino acids that share a lot in common in spite of one significant difference. Your body relies on both arginine and ornithine amino acids to function properly, and they work together, and separately.

Review: Good supplements. - Hard to find item. Everything seems fine. No broken pills or any issues.
Review: Very Happy - I'm new to L-arginine supplementation. I started with NOW brand with the same amounts of arginine and ornithine per capsule as this Nutricost product; to see if I could get the same effect for a lower price buying the Nutricost 3-pack. I dosed for 3 weeks using NOW brand before starting Nutricost and just finished 3 weeks of Nutracost before writing this review. I take 10 capsules (5 grams L-Arginine) first thing in the morning on an empty stomach along with 1000ml of purified water (now for a total of 6 weeks starting with NOW and finishing with Nutracost). A few cups of hot coffee follow the water and if I'm hungry I eat a light low protein all-carb snack. On some days I do an additional scoop of a powdered Arginine/Citrulline for a 2nd 5 gram dose of L-Arginine. My 2nd dose can occur anywhere between 3 hours to 14 hours after taking the 10 capsules including rarely right before bed. About 1/3rd the time I don't take a 2nd dose only because my stomach is not empty at a convenient time to mix the drink. So some days I don't do the extra 5 gram dose. After my very first dose of NOW brand (10 capsules) I noticed an amazing effect. I'm 68 and still working. Anyone our age realizes our memory is not as fast and accurate as it used to be. Right? The almost immediate effect had to do with my mental focus. The easiest way to explain what happened is this. The first week of supplementing 10 grams of arginine (capsules plus drink) I made better progress completing my never ending TO DO List (including right after my first dose), I procrastinated less, didn't get as tired when working physically at my job as a contractor, and many times didn't stop to eat lunch because I wasn't hungry. I was "Wow-ed"! My initial goal of trying this supplement was to reduce my blood pressure. There are quite a few double blind placebo controlled studies showing that arginine/citrulline reduces blood pressure. Most use a ratio of 5 grams arginine to 1 gram citrulline dosing. And some dose the arginine portion all the way up to 30 grams a day showing no ill effects. I had short-lived issues with diarrhea once with NOW brand and 3 times with Nutricost so I would probably stick with NOW brand if it was not more expensive. I think there were other dietary factors that helped cause the diarrhea but certainly 10 capsules of a supplement plus a liter of water and then hot coffee on top of those factors pushed me over the edge to this unpleasant experience. Not a big enough problem to stop me from continuing my high doses and this is not generally a problem I have from taking these supplements. Regarding my BP. Right before starting these supplements I invested in a fancy arm cuff BP instrument that automatically takes 3 readings, averages them, and stores results in my iphone for future reference. I was concerned about my BP because the new cuff was showing Hypertension Stage 2. After the first week of arginine I noticed the top number had come down a couple points but the bottom number remained at 90 and as high as 95. That was discouraging so I decided I would wait a couple months before taking more measurements. But recently during my annual medical exam they measured my BP at 72/118. I said, "excuse me"? "Can you take that measurement again"? So she took it again on the other arm and got the same reading. Wow. That's a good reading for a guy 68 who smokes a few cigars every week and typically has a couple cocktails at the end of his work day! I have always refused BP drugs despite my cardiologist's constant nagging. I can't tell you what the quantitative effect of the arginine was only because my fancy BP monitor is worthless to provide any baseline of data. Despite my aforementioned "bad habits" I should mention I eat a whole-food plant-based diet. I eat no animals or animal products. No beef, pork, chicken, fish, cheese, milk, yogurt or anything even remotely related to animals. My two best friends both a few years older are now using the same arginine/ornithine capsules and arginine/citrulline drink with similar effect. One friend notices more from the drink than the capsules while I notice more from the capsules than the drink. Either l-citrulline and l-ornithine are required with the l-arginine to get the NO making process started in the body. They also make the effect of the arginine last for 20 hours or more. Makes sense some people might be better using one vs the other since everyone's body is different as well as how much damage has been done to artery endothelium. My final observation after 6 weeks is that I no longer get the initial mental "buzz" I noticed the first week. But the productivity and mental focus remain elevated. Probably because my NO level was so low when I first started taking this supplement. I have read that when you stop taking the supplement the effect does not immediately stop. So this matches my experience. If I stopped supplementing for awhile, I would again notice a kick from starting back up again after baseline NO production declined. My two cents.
