Review: Wonderful filter - This filter insert does a fantastic job of removing suspended debris from my tank. I change it twice a week, using two filters in rotation. My first pair lasted one year. My best advice is to follow cleaning instructions, and do not use any mechanical means of cleaning. Don't use your fingers, a brush or anything. Just spray with water removing as much junk as possible, then soak in a 25% solution of chlorine bleach for about 24 hours. Then rinse thoroughly and air-dry. They look like new with this treatment. UPDATE: I have also learned that these filters age over time in spite of appearing to clean up quite well with chlorox. I find that my old filters work well for a week or more while the new ones show reduced flow and some filter noise after 2-3 days. Same tank and filter housing. I find that the new ones are filtering better, by not letting as much material through, thus they are loading up faster. This is actually what you want. The water is even cleareer as a result. Well, I thought if 24 hours soaking in bleach solution is good, how about 5 or 6 days. DON'T DO IT. The rubber on the filter starts to dissolve and become very sticky. Had to discard. Its purpose is to polish the water so it will pull very fine particles out, causing it to clog rapidly. Be sure to follow the cleaning instructions for it to get multiple uses from it. **Q: When do i replace the micron polishing filter?** A: It’s interesting. The micron polishing filter works great, but for only about a week at a time. I didn’t know this when I started using it instead of my Charcoal Filter system. I finally figured out that I needed to clean it at least once a week if not sooner. I’ll probably go back to the original filtering system with Charcoal and only use the Micron filter if my tank becomes cloudy. I have a 55 gallon take and 3 Micron Filters and I now clean 2 of them at a time with a 3 to 1 water to bleach. Example: 700 ml bleach to 2100 ml of water. **Q: What do I use to clean the micron cartridge** A: I soak it overnight in a 2-gallon pail of water with 1 cup of Clorox added to the 2-gallons of water.(you have to weigh the cartridge down or it will float) IMPORTANT ... I then empty the pail and soak the cartridge in a 5-gallon bucket filled with 5-gallons of plain tap water for FOUR MORE DAYS. I had two cartridges for each of my filters and I rotated them this way every 5 days. Some people go with a stronger solution of Clorox, but they use a dechlorination agent in the rinse.
