I love the idea of the recoil but I ended up not using mine. You are not to pull the ear buds to unroll the cord but the recoil itself pulls on the ear buds in order to stop spinning. I was worried the recoil would damage my ear buds. **Q: Are there different sizes? Do the colors designate the sizes?** A: Yes, there are 3 sizes and those are available in the five colors. The Small size is specifically for earbuds that do NOT have a microphone or inline feature on the cord. The Medium is for headphones with a microphone or for USB cables up to 5' long. The Large winder is for USB type cords up to 8 feet long. **Q: Will it work for pulling one end of the cord? I want to use this sort of as a dispenser keeping the unit stationary.** A: The ways these work are by folding the cord in half around the hook, so yes, both halves do hang out one side. To wind, you must pull the cords in a downward motion, to unwind you pull out strait/upward motion so you would need to have enough clearance to be able to execute both maneuvers. I have never fixed it stationary, so I cannot advise you of the results of doing so, but in theory, I can see how you may be able to make it work with a little tinkering. I was scared a little bit when buying because of some other reviews complaining that this stopped working. And I thought that this happen to me only after a week. But there's a hook and under that hook there's a small white button. The cable should press that button to be retracted.In fact, this seems to be quite durable. I have it since two months now and had no problem once I discovered what does the trick.If you have thicker cables than the ones for headsets, like mini USB cables you should buy bigger versions. Also, I find that a bit of care is needed to get it to wrap neatly by both carefully dividing the cable in half such that the plug end is a bit longer than the earbud end, and guiding the wires to split evenly to the left and right of the hook.But in fact the little ritual of putting it away, and the rapid pleasure of pulling it out tangle-free, is quite agreeable.
