On opening the box I was stunned by the quality of this neck, so smooth as standard, nice and thin...thinner than any strat neck I've played. It's true to say the frets required attention, but well worth the effort. I'd never pay to have someone setup my guitar, it's part of it for me, I like to tinker. So this has been perfect for me. Had to cut a little off the heel to get the 25.5 scale length to coincide with the bridge, also had to create a bespoke pickguard, that wasn't easy with my tools, but got there. Perfect? Hell no!! More than adequate? Hell yeah!! For around £250 I've got a 24 fret HSH strat with a vega trem installed, all thanks to desertcart and suppliers like Alnicov😊👍 A few little tweaks and definitely make another pickguard, thats just a rough template 😊 work in progress 🤭 I'm loving it! That being said, if you're looking to learn and are willing to try it out, this is a good choice because it's really not in bad conditon (I've come across brand new guitars with necks and frets in trully awful condition) and you're not losing a huge amount of money if you completely screw it up. At this price, it does make for a very good neck to practice on and get proficient on neck work. Getting it playable is really not a big job, it only takes an hour or two, and it's not as difficult as you might think, so don't be put off by it. The trick to fret work is simple: take your time, go slow, and go carefully. Make sure your neck is as straight as you can get it before you start, otherwise you're only going to make it worse, so don't be afraid of your truss rod. You'll need a Sharpie, a straight edge, a fret rocker, a sanding block, a crowning file, and some 0000 steel wool. There are some excellent tutorial videos on YouTube covering all aspects of neck work, so watch a few before you dive in. The neck had a lot of high frets, so the whole neck needed the frets levelling, crowned and dressed. The frets did not need bevelling, which was a nice surprise for a neck in this price range.
