I just used painter’s tape from the dollar store to keep the paint from getting anywhere other than the soles. A 1oz bottle in a single base coat can cover a good amount of surface area, however it may wear off in time. Applying multiple coats as well as using an acrylic finisher can help extend the durability of the paint. The best bet is to try out 1 bottle on your project and see if it is enough. Used it on two old leather gun holsters. They holsters were black and tan used matching colors. Didn’t dilute the paint just cleaned and applied. It made them look brand new. Without all the old shoe polishing. Seems flexible. Don’t know about the durability yet. Probably put on three light coats to get solid color back . Left a semi low shine look.
