## Overview

The Nooelec GOES Weather Satellite Mesh Antenna is a high-performance 21dBi parabolic antenna designed for professional-grade reception of weather satellite signals near 1.7GHz. Featuring a robust LMR400 feed cable with SMA connector and an upgraded azimuth/elevation mounting system, it enables precise, near real-time decoding of GOES, NOAA, and other satellite imagery. Compatible with popular SDR software like SatDump, this antenna is a must-have for millennial tech managers craving reliable, high-resolution weather data with hassle-free setup and expert support.

## Description

The included antenna is a high-performance L-Band GOES weather satellite parabolic antenna. It has a gain of ~21dBi and an LMR400 cable terminated with male SMA connectors to connect to your gear. The antenna is linearly polarized (vertical or horizontal depending on the mounting), with an electric field aligned with the main reflector and feed-point grid lines. It can be deployed for both linearly and circularly polarized signals (RHCP and LHCP). Assembled antenna dimensions are 0.99m x 0.61m x 0.38m (39" x 24" x 15"). It weighs about 2kg (70.5oz). Our GOES antenna performs highly effectively when paired with the SAWbird+ GOES LNA module (NOT included) This antenna receives GOES broadcasts with ease due to its fairly confined radiation pattern, without the necessity of highly accurate pointing at the target satellite, as it features a 3dB beam width of 15deg (+/- 7.5deg) on the axis parallel to the main reflector and feed-point grid lines, and 10deg (+/- 5deg) on the orthogonal axis. It is recommended to mount the antenna on a pole of not more than 5cm (2") in diameter, and would perform equally well when mounted vertically or horizontally. Review: Major Improvements With The Mounting System - Review Updated - The antenna came with an undocumented bonus! The dish to pipe system has been upgraded. Included is a mount (see PIX) that allows the elevation and azimuth to be adjusted while the dish is firmly secured to the vertical pipe. The original 'L' plate is included, marked "Alternate Mounting Bracket". The new system is FAR superior: After locking the dish down on the pipe, the azmiuth and elevation are easily tweaked. Once in position, two nuts are tightened and done. This new mount is not mentioned anywhere in the documentation - it is attached to the dish exactly as the original 'L' bracket would have been... There are issues with the original 'L' bracket, with the elevation slot. The clamp holding the entire dish assembly must be loose to adjust AZ/EL, while keeping the clamp stable. Adjusting one causes the other to slip and a third arm is really helpful. I know this for fact, as I have another 2' solid dish using the exact same 'L' bracket. The new AZ/EL mount alone makes the price of this dish acceptable. OK, in conjunction with the NooElec SAW+GOES filter/amplifier driving 20' of double shielded RG-55 cable (53 Ohms), the dish performs fine, in a snowstorm here. The SDR here is the RSP1a by SDRPlay, and SATdump software is used for decoding the images. The SAW filter and amp must be mounted at the pigtail lead from the dish. Any additional cable between the dish and SAW WILL degrade overall performance. My SAW is powered by an external bias-tee between the SDR and cable end in the shack, as the RSP1a lacks sufficient current capability on it's bias-tee. Note that the NooElec SAW+Goes is NOT waterproof. As can be just seen in the PIX, I used a 5" long pill bottle, with a hole drilled in the top to just accept the pigtail lead. After connecting the pigtail and output coax, the SAW slides up into the bottle, and coax seal waterproofs the top of the assembly. That said, as others have indicated, the overall quality of the dish is marginal to poor. Fit and finish is rough. There are sharp, unfinished edges between the dish mesh sectors that can cut skin. I gave a 5-Star rating due to the inclusion of the superior AZ/EL mounting system. Big PLUS. I installed this rig during a snowfall...note the mount PIX. The mount has two bushings at 90 degrees from each other, with a long 10mm bolt. When loose, the azmiuth and elevation are easily adjusted - there are detents on the mount to make positioning easier. Once set, simply tighten the two bolts ... no messing with the mount to pipe brackets. I may be wrong, but NooElec does not manufacture this kit. The antenna boom assemble has Chinese labeling, and no pains were taken on the dish fit and finish. Have Fun! UPDATE after several days of perfect reception: Observing the picture of the mount, note the coax pigtail exiting the feed antenna boom. It is impeding the elevation - it is just about maxed out at 39 degrees due to the pigtail. Simply reversing (rotate 180 degrees) the dish on the mount places the pigtail BELOW the elevation adjust, allowing full 90 degrees of EL if desired. This new mount is lights out good!
Review: Works well, but some tips you should know to avoid frustration - This works well, and with careful tuning you can get a VIT as low as single digits with good coax and a good LNA, which is phenomenal for a grid antenna. As others have said, basic sighting at the right azimuth and the declination for your location (use Dishpointer.com to get these for your location and GOES satellite) and you will soon see signal and images come in if all else is right. But, you'll want to make it as best as possible, and from there let me offer a few tips. First, you are best not using either mount that comes with this dish. While both are workable, you will find yourself terribly frustrated by the lack of precision allowable with the supplied mounts. You will find yourself much less frustrated if you get a DBS dish mount and retrofit it on the back of the antenna. I used an old DirectTV az/el mount from ebay and the ability to make minute adjustments in azimuth and elevation made all the difference. These mounts require a 2inch OD pipe, but are worth the slight cost because they will eliminate many headaches. Second, I only recently realized how much pain I was causing myself when using remote access software to tune the antenna. I was using team viewer for years to see the signal quality on the PC, and viewing it from my phone at the antenna. Seems like a great and convenient way to do that, until you realize, like I did, that there is 100's of milliseconds of latency (delay) between when you make an adjustment at the antenna, and when the effect it causes it appears on your phone. To call this maddening is an understatement. There are ways to mitigate this, and directly talk to the PC using Teamviewer and a local network address and not their servers, but if you can avoid this, you will have an easier time of it. Maybe have someone watch the screen for you and shout out numbers, or even better, bring laptop to the dish, connect an SDR and LNA to the laptop and then to the antenna so you can see the 1694.1 GHz signal directly and in real time. This was the solution I eventually used, and you will find this a much easier way to fine tune. I've been receiving beautiful images from the GOES birds for years, and it is very enjoyable and satisfying. Using an aggregation/viewing tool like Vitality GOES (free) makes this even better. Enjoy!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: There's some thin plastic on the metal piece that goes in the middle of the dish, I guess it's the collector, should it be removed?**
A: Yes, it is just to protect it. Thanks!

**Q: What cables and connectors do i need? I bought the bundle but no cables or connectors. No instructions..**
A: All the connectors are SMA. You need 30-35 feet of LMR 400 cable with Sma connectors at each end. Make sure all outside connections are sealed against the weather. The lna must be put in a watertight box. Silicone sealer DOES NOT stick very well to LMR 400.

**Q: The discription says it has lrm400. does it? There's a bundle but its out of stock and it has a picture of it but there's no picture here.**
A: On this antenna there is only about 16 inch long RG8 that comes out of the feed assy. There is no LMR 400 included. There is a bundle available that has everything you need to get started, except software.

**Q: Bias tee needed**
A: Yes I have an SDRPlay SDR2 and the antenna works fine with the bias voltage from that.
