Most importantly, because it has a strap that I can carabine to my backpack. For MY use, I like that I can leave it dangling on the side and quickly pull up with my hand when needed. The case seems like a giant ziploc (it does have a ziploc sealer) bag with the plastic fabric stitched around it. While the think vinyl works great in minor rain, I don't see the case 100% waterproof should there be a major storm or if the map case becomes submerged in liquids. I do see minor fibers around the stitching becoming detached in hair lengths and thickness.
