It was my first full 3-D free-roaming game I ever owned and it blew me away. One must realize that back in the day any 3-D game was a breakthrough in technology. In 1976 I got The Pong console, then in 1978 the Atari 2600; then in 1985 I got the Nintendo NES; in 1991 the Sega Genesis; then ( TA-DAA ) in 1996 the Sega Saturn. What our one star friend probably doesn't understand is, back in the day ( when they first came out ) these games were the bomb! So us old fart gamers still remember the thrill of playing these new cutting-edge games for the first time. That being said, I still remember playing Croc for the first time and loving it, and my son Zac and I played it a lot back then. But lets get down to brass tacks, shall we? Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is a game developed by the good folks at Fox Interactive, the makers of Alien Trilogy and Die Hard Arcade, both great SS games that I love to play. The game-play is reminiscent of Mario 64, mainly because originally Croc was suppose to be Yoshi, but it fell through and the rest is history. The Plot: The Gobbo King ( Rufus ) finds a basket in the water, and in the basket was a baby crocodile. The Gobbos ( cute little furry buggers ) raise him to be a gentle friend and to protect them from the evil Baron Dante. The evil Baron then imprisons all the Gobbos and their King, and it's up to you to find them and set them free. If you have the Saturn 3-D controller or the Eclipse Fighting Stick, use them! They both work much better than the stock Saturn directional pad! The game-play is very fun but the control could be tightened up a bit, but it's still not bad at all. You use a tail-whip and a jump up and land on your butt attack to kill the baddies. ( just like in Mario 64 ) You also use it to open up crates and smash the things that need smashing. There are five islands ( worlds ) to explore, there's Volcano, Ice, Baron Dante's Island, Desert, and Crystal Island. There's secret levels, secret Islands, power-ups, and lots to explore. Some of the Bosses are almost to easy, and others are very hard, but all are cool to fight. You collect crystals ( like the rings in Sonic ) and after collecting 100 you get an extra life. If you get hit, you lose the crystals but don't die. If you get hit by a baddy without the crystals, you die. ( and you will die! ) The graphics are good for the day, the music is cheerful and bouncy, the colors are bright and vivid, and the game is a fun ride down memory lane. Is it one of the best games? That's for you to decide, but we had a lot of fun playing it. I did play it again a month ago, and I had almost as much fun as I remembered back in 1997. Does it compare to today's games? Probably not, but we should never compare old games with the games of today unless we remember why the games were made in the first place, for FUN!
