It keeps knots and sap from coming through when painting ....not sure about critters, maybe bake in oven 1st ??? after you seal branch you can varnish, this puts harder coating and would give another layer of critter prevention **Q: Can I apply this before I paint? Trying to avoid wood splinters coming up** A: Yes, it is great to apply before you paint.
