I made a hot pot meal for my sister visiting from out of town, and I made my own small Asian-inspired ground beef meatballs and ground lamb meatballs. As the meatballs take the longest to cook, we used the strainers to keep a meatball submerged in the boiling broth and then cooked our vegetables in the broth, fishing them out with long cooking chopsticks (not our eating chopsticks). The meatballs were cooked perfectly, and we started another batch in the strainers as we dined on those we had just cooked. We each used two strainers as we needed room in the pot to cook our vegetables, but that was plenty for small bites.
