Protect your vessel against abrasive wear during normal use for as long as you own your boat! Frequently Asked Questions Can I Install a KeelGuard on a Kayak or Canoe? Because most kayaks and canoes are made out of low-surface energy plastics, our Keelguard is not compatible with either as the 3M adhesive doesn't bond to LSE plastic. Can I Install a KeelGuard on a Jet Ski, Ski-Doo, Wave Runner, or Other Personal Watercraft (PWC)? Our KeelGuard is not compatible with modern hull designs and must be installed 4-6 inches above the resting water line. Can I Install a KeelGuard on a Catamaran? The KeelGuard is not compatible with most Catamarans due to having very sharp keels with a steep 90° upturn. Please call Megaware directly if you have questions about your Catamaran. Can I Install a KeelGuard on an Aluminum Boat? The KeelGuard can be installed on some aluminum boats. If your boat has a raised or reinforced center keel, it cannot be raised higher than 1/4 inch. The KeelGuard is not recommended to install over boat wrap. Must be installed on the actual surface of the boat. We do not recommend installing the KeelGuard over a vinyl wrap because it will pull the wrap off the boat. Can I Apply the Megaware KeelGuard Over Boat Bottom Paint or Anti-Fouling Paint? Anti-fouling or boat bottom paint must be removed prior to installing the KeelGuard. You can apply boat bottom or anti-fouling paint OVER the KeelGuard once you have installed it to the actual surface of the boat. Why Do I Have to Install the KeelGuard 4-6 inches ABOVE the Resting Water Line if I'm Only Using it for Beaching? When you get your boat up to speed, the water pressure can cause the KeelGuard to peel off the hull. To avoid this, apply it 4-6 inches above the water line. Can I Install a KeelGuard Below the Water Line? Do not install the KeelGuard below the water line. Water pressure against the leading edge of the KeelGuard when bringing your boat is up to plane can cause it to peel off. Can I Install a KeelGuard if My Boat Sits on Trailer Rollers? The KeelGuard cannot touch, sit on, or rest against anything such as bunks, rollers, v-blocks, or bow stops while sitting on the trailer. These "pressure points" destroy the 3M adhesive and the KeelGuard will fail. Please check your boat trailer for compatibility. What if My Boat Sits on a Floating Dock? Do not let the KeelGuard touch or rest against anything, as it will destroy the 3M adhesive and cause it to fail or when launching the KeelGuard could snag on the dock and tear. Can I Install a KeelGuard Shorter Than the Recommended Length or Cut it Shorter? The KeelGuard is designed to extend beyond the lowest point of the boat to prevent snagging and tearing when beaching or loading your boat. You can exceed the recommended length, but not shorten it. The foam core of the 3M adhesive is designed to split in the middle when you pull the KeelGuard. To remove the adhesive from the boat use a putty knife and pinstripe removal disc. The Keel of My Boat has Damage, Can I Install a KeelGuard Over the Damaged Area? A good surface is crucial for proper KeelGuard installation. Damage to the boat's keel, unprofessional repairs, or poorly bonded paint or gel coat can cause the KeelGuard to fail. It is recommended to repair any damage before installing a KeelGuard. Can I Install the KeelGuard on a Hot or Cold Day? 3M advises against applying the adhesive when the hull temperature is below 65°F or above 100°F. Ideally, bring the boat into a garage to warm up or cool down to the acceptable temperature range. Both the KeelGuard and boat hull should be at the same temperature during application.

Review: Helpful hints to ease installation - I have been installing keel guards like this for 25 years and like the ones before, this guard is on point for protection and quality of material. I would like to offer a couple hints to help you get more from this product. 1. Buy longer than you think you need. I typically run the full length of the keel. Why? I have found that yhe more tou protect the better off you water craft is going to be. If you ever come ashore on sand, you may want to spin around to leave or you get caught with dropping tide... the extra protection never hurts anything. 2. Installation made super simple. Take wide blue painters tape and make a copy of the keel guard by laying out the blue tape on the rubber side of the material (not the adhesive side). Why? Well when your trying to measure 5" width on a keel (a curved surface) you will never hit the exact size. By making a tape copy of the actual guard you can lay that out on your boat...then mark the outside edge of this with blue tape. When you remove the copy, you are left with the exact size of the area the keel guard will occupy. You can then scuff the area and apply the primer in full confidence you have only roughed the area up your keel guard will occupy. As for this actual product, I just installed on a 23' Seadoo GTX 300 Ltd. The process took 3 hrs and using the method above, it was an exact fit. Again, top product that will give you years of use.
Review: Take your time and prep well for lasting results - Straightforward install. Take your time, prep the area, especially if you’re removing one. I replaced the factory one that came on my 2022 Nitro Z20. The boat was a left over model in 2023 so I’ve only used it two seasons. Wasn’t impressed with the factory one not lasting. Like I said, take your time, remove all the old 2 sided tape from the old. I highly recommend using a heat gun, then a rubber decal removal wheel that goes on a drill. You can find these at Orileys or here on desertcart as well. The wheel will save you a ton of time on the removal process. Then clean the area really well with some rubbing alcohol, scuff it up with the included pad and definitely use the primer that comes with the kit. Or buy more if needed but definitely use enough of it. Use the tool for applying the guard. This helps work the guard upwards with pressure applying it evenly. Hope this helps someone thinking of installing themselves. I know most of the shops overcharge by a lot. Like $1000+. I have my own Powersports shop and luckily have the necessary equipment & tools to make this job a success.

A: Yes, you can always go longer than the recommended size.

**Q: Will this adhere to a vinyl wrapped boat?**
A: Wraps tend to last 3-5 years, and even longer on vertical surfaces like the hull of a boat. Expect the same for the keelguard applied on top of the same wrap.

**Q: Will this work on aluminum boats??**
A: a painted aluminum boat yes, i would not put it on an unpainted surface.

I have been installing keel guards like this for 25 years and like the ones before, this guard is on point for protection and quality of material. I would like to offer a couple hints to help you get more from this product. 1. Buy longer than you think you need. I typically run the full length of the keel. Why? I have found that yhe more tou protect the better off you water craft is going to be. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect for My Boat

I thought this would be a challenge to install on my Phoenix bass boat. Instead I was pleasantly surprised at how solid it is. I tried taping it to the boat so make a template for the sanding prep but the tape wouldn't hold. Instead I made a template from a roll of craft paper, taped it in place and used painters tape to outline the profile of the keel guard. This helped me keep the sanding to exactly where it should be. The tape also helped me properly align the guard. It is stuck tight and should never come off. Best of all it looks like a pro did it instead of a rank amateur.
