The heft and finish is very nice and with proper technique, it is quite efficient in honing the edge of a non-serrated blade. I use it routinely after every use of my Henckel knife set to hone any imperfections away in the blade’s edge that may have resulted with use. When testing with the magazine paper cut test, I notice a significant improvement in cutting efficiency after using this “sharpening” steel. I like that this instrument feels like it is machined from a single piece of steel and the handle has a nice shape and feel to it that just “fits” my hand nicely. The size and length of this honing rod is just right for my collection of “standard” sized kitchen knives and is long enough to accommodate my largest/longest knife, without feeling too long or unwieldy. Overall, very pleased with the performance. Those that may have trouble honing the edge of their knives may want to review and practice the proper technique of honing their blade, and the actual purpose of a honing rod (it is not to sharpen the blade, but just to microscopically align the cutting edge of an already sharpened blade). This Henckels' steel fit the bill, is solidly built and feels great in my hand. The 9 inch length is ideal, not so long that it is unwieldy, but long enough to sharpen an 8 inch chef's knife with ease.
