I was a little surprised that the ring is made of plastic. The wall attachment is metal and the whole thing, installed correctly, is sturdy (I used the drywall anchors). I was expecting all metal (maybe I didn't read the description thoroughly enough) but now that I have it, plastic makes sense and doesn't detract from the look or function and it won't swing and bang into the wall when you take the towel off, like a previous one I had.
