I know it sounds ludicrous but I can't do it!** A: After trying all the hints, I used BronxRev comments and it worked! I used my phone flashlight and looked at the top of the pump, it has a very small arrow indicating which direction to turn the pump (counterclockwise). Then I took pump off the bottle, washed off the oil I wasted, abd dried the pump. I got a paper towel and gripped the clear tube part very hard. Then I used my right hand to rotate the very top of the pump (mine was orange) while keeping hard grip on the lower clear area of pump. There is no expiration on the packaging (I looked on my bottle). In the refrigerator it should last 9-10 months if it falls into line with other natural salmon oils I have used in the past. You won't use it all due to her size as she will only be taking a half a teaspoon a day. Another thought, you can make treats with the salmon oil too. I chose this particular product over the others simply by just 'taking a chance' that I'd be one of the lucky purchasers who would have a positive experience; and did I ever! Number 1, the bottle arrived in a tight and leakproof vacuum-seal type of plastic. Therefore no spillage during shipping. Secondly, the bottle came with a squeeze-type dispenser already attached to the bottle, along with a pump-style dispenser as an additional option. I opted to use the pump-style dispenser, so I switched them out. There has been absolutely no leakage at all with this pump dispenser. It works perfectly. So all of that alleviated the bottle/pump concerns that I had read so much about. (EDIT: I now notice that all of the recent reviews about leaking bottles are from customers who purchased the 8oz bottle. Apparently the shipping method - and subsequent shipping handling - of the 8oz bottle remains problematic. I myself purchased the 16oz bottle, and it was shipped in a box as opposed to an envelope.) As for the taste (according to my dog): I first tried adding it to his dry food. He seemed curious, but wouldn't touch it. So I instead pumped some of the salmon oil onto a paper plate to see if he would lick it from that. He absolutely loved it! So now that's what I do; I have a dedicated plastic bowl that I use just for his "juice", and he licks his lips just at the sight of it. Therefore I can't speak highly enough of this salmon oil - which I had primarily purchased to help him with his allergies (paw licking). That issue is now a thing of the past. WHEW! PLUS(!!!)... numerous people have been commenting on how soft and clean his fur feels. I'm not sure about how really clean it is, as he spends 2+ hrs a day running in the woods and jumping in streams and rivers, but his fur really is much softer, smoother, and healthy looking. So there's that! Overall I find this product to be an absolute positive experience overall (although I've tried no other similar products to compare it with). So if you are unsure about the bottle / pump, there is no need to be. If there had been a problem with this issue in the past, this company has obviously made positive changes in that regard.
