It is not in the heat of her frustration that Darla takes responsibility for her mistakes because that would be unreasonable for a child of her age. It is the fact that she reflects on her days and mistakes that is the true genius of this story. It makes it not only more relatable, but something that we as parents can teach our children and actually expect of them. I LOVE Darla’s interactions with her friends and sister because they’re not always perfect and that is what we as parents are trying to teach our children to navigate in life - dealing with challenges that come our way and making the best decisions possible at each point.
