## Description

From the manufacturer Seachem Matrix Bio Media Matrix is a high porosity biomedia that provides efficient biofiltration for the removal of nitrogenous waste. Matrix is a porous inorganic solid about 10 mm in diameter. Each liter of Matrix provides as much surface (>~700 m2) as 170 liters of plastic balls! Plastic bio-materials provide only external surface area, whereas Matrix provides both external and internal macroporous surface area. These macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrix to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter. Matrix is completely inert and will not breakdown. It need not be replaced. Since the majority of the bacteria are internal, Matrix may be rinsed when needed without damaging the filter. Matrix is compatible with all types of wet or wet-dry filters.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this stuff the same as pumice?**
A: As Matthew M suggested, I looked at the data sheet.  100% pumice by weight.  The data sheet gives a Chemical Abstracts Service number (CAS#) for it, and that is 1332-09-8.  Google that number.

**Q: do you need to keep this in a bag or in the tray in my cascade canister filter?**
A: It can be placed in your tray. it is loose. Might want to make sure you use a tray for the canister that has the lid on it.

**Q: Does it work the same way as the ceramic bio rings?**
A: A million times better.  The ceramic rings are trash.  This has a lot more surface area because of the small cavaties in each piece.  This stuff is fantastic for your bacteria.

**Q: I have a Magnum 350 filter which has a canister that has charcoal on the inside and a foam sleeve outside.  Do I use this to replace the charcoal?**
A: No, charcoal is a chemical filter.  Matrix is a biological filter.If you did not need chemical filtering in your system, you could repurpose the Magnum 350 as a bio-filter by replacing the carbon with Matrix.  This would help control ammonia/nitrites/nitrates at the expense of controlling organic pollutants.
