It's plexiglass on top of a wood "maze" for the balls...but the magnet itself is not strong enough to move them around..it has to lay flat to even work, and then the balls won't stay in holes....a complete disappointment. **Q: Does your child find the wand string too short to use?** A: Yes, the string is too short, 4-5", longer would have been ideal. It would help with getting the magnet into position properly in order to move the balls. **Q: My toddler played this maze today, then we found that the bead already got stuck in few tunnels. what can i do? how can i fix it?** A: I tried and tried and could not find a fix. I even got one of my really strong magnets, didn't move it. I ended up, sadly, returning it. I was so disappointed as I have always trusted Melissa & Doug for excellent quality but this was a dud. **Q: The balls get stuck between the cover and base.
