**Q: 50 watt version has hole in front cover? How big is it? Buying so baby nerite can't get into heaterto replace old heater with gaps like that**
A: if your talking about the area around the red lED its small but if worried , i would put a little dab of silicone and let dry.  then use . will tank a look and message back

A: It has an internal thermometer. It turns off when it gets 78°
