I have used the oil-based stuff for years to create piano finishes, and while it does an excellent job, it is seriously messy. This stuff reminds me of the old glue paste I used it primary school. It goes on easy, and it washes off with water. There are two things to keep in mind. The first is that you have to understand build coats. Don't expect this stuff to fill in 1 coat. You'll need to apply 3-4 coats, depending on the porosity of the wood, to completely fill the grain. Between coats, use 150 or 180 grit, but only sand it lightly...just enough to give the next coat something to "bite" into. After you get to coat number 3 or 4, let it dry overnight (about 6-8 hours). Come back and sand starting with 120-150 grit to level out the surface. Block sand only! Don't bare hand sand it nor power sand it. Sand until all the shiny spots are gone and the surface is completely flat. Once you get it flat, graduate to 180, then 220, then 320, and then 400 or 600, removing any scratches from the previous coat. Once you get to 400 or 600 and all the scratches from the previous grits are gone, top coat it, and you'll have a mirror finish. The other thing is, DON'T PILE IT ALL ON IN ONE HEAVY COAT. After sanding, I apply any stain I might want. Usually, I just use Minwax natural to add depth with not much color. I follow that with a coat of Zinsser Wax Free Seal Coat, diluted 50:50 with denatured alcohol. After a light sanding I do 2 or 3 coats of Aquacoat, using either a motel keycard as a spatula or just rub it in while wearing nitrile gloves, making sure to wipe off the excess to minimizing sanding. After it's dry, I lightly sand it, looking carefully for any spots that had build up, and finish it off with a dozen plus light coats of aerosol Deft Lacquer (gloss of your choice). **Q: If this has a jello consistency, how will it stay in place when applying it to my upper cabinet frames? Not recommended for oil-wax applications (Rubbio). ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Does What It's Supposed to Do *by N***T on January 2, 2023* I've read the reviews, which are for the most part pretty positive. A few folks had trouble but most did not. My experience with Aqua Clear is generally good. It's not a magical "practically does the job for you" kind of product. It is a grain filler, if you've worked with oak then the need for grain fillers should be somewhat familiar. This product works but it does what it does progressively. It's a water based product so when you apply it the grain in the wood will "rise", that's normal with most woods. After application and a suitable drying time you have to sand it. Some complained that if you use sand paper you sand right through it. That is perfectly okay, the majority of the product is supposed to sand off leaving the product in the "lower" pores and grain. You build the product on the wood through successive layering until you reach the smoothness you are looking for. For very porous woods the directions suggest sealing with an unwaxed shellac first to seal the wood. I can see that as helpful. Sealing wood is not an "effortless" process, no matter what you use. Aqua Clear isn't cheap but it does work if you use it correctly. I use an old PETCO rewards card as an applicator and I give the product ample time to dry.
