It tightens as you pull on the leash. She managed to chew through the old one, and I didn't want to shell out big bucks for another she may end up chewing up. I bought a medium for my mutt - she's 20 lbs. The velcro part of this harness fits very tight around her chest and the leg holes seem to be in an odd place. I wouldn't order the next size up as the black buckle part fits just fine, I fear the large would be too big, and the buckle does not adjust.
