The older model only supports 24v passive. Where as the new model also supports standard 802.3af/A POE. So you would need to look at the specs for POE. As far as how to tell the difference, I think the only way is that the box on the new model has a little blurb in the corner mention support for both. The box background is white and the blurb is in a blue triangle in the corner. **Q: How many client devices can this product serve? I'm upgrading my home with smart light switches and I need a product that will handle 50 or more.** A: This will not have a problem with 50+ devices, but that may generate a lot of traffic, if I were trying to do that I would keep them on a separate network from my other WiFi devices. **Q: includes the poe?** A: Yes, the PoE adapters are included with the UniFi AP AC Lite single pack. However, they are not included in the 5 pack. So, stick with the single packs and you will be fine. **Q: How do I install this?** A: I installed mine in the ceiling with two small anchors. The unit is powered by POE (power over internet). In other words, you can use either the supplied POE adapter which requires plugging your Ethernet cable into the adapter, plugging the adapter in, and then using a short Ethernet cable from the adapter to the ap unit or you can purchase a POE network switch. I am using a POE network switch (ubiquiti 8 port managed gigabit switch with 802.3af POE). On that switch, there are eight ports, 4 are powered and 4 are not. To use the switch, put your input cable into one of the non-powered ports and the unifi ap into one of the powered ports. The powered ports will supply the power over the Ethernet cable so the supplied power adapter is not needed. It is important to note, that the switch is only a switch and will not supply ip addresses to the access points or anything else plugged into the switch. You can purchase an ubiquiti gateway device to do this or you can use an existing router (I am doing this). I currently plug have an Ethernet cable plugged into my router with the other end serving as the input into the switch (plugged into one of the unpowered ports).
