Review: It. Never. Sleeps. (Oh yes it does!) - There's a constant whine from the unit when idle, that I think is mostly from the cooling fan, but may be the hard drive itself spinning, or quite possibly both. It never sleeps. It never spins down and shuts the **** up. The usage pattern I have is that I may be using the computer it's connected to for hours without needing it, but then I go away and that computer becomes a server where I'm using content on that drive remotely. So, having it shut up when not being used would be nice. It may be macOS (Monterey)'s fault. I've told Spotlight to not index it, I've told it it can put idle disks to sleep, I've made sure nothing user-visible is looking at it. And yet, every few seconds, there's an access (by the sounds of it), and that's probably keeping it awake. If it is the fan, it's not as automatic as it's made out to be, as even when the drive is idle and the room it's in is frankly chilly, it keeps going. The only option is to actually eject the volume; that works, but then must be manually remounted using disk utility when I want it to be available for use. Apart from that it works great. It's just that it's almost as insomniac as I am. (I don't have an eject icon.) Edit: Naturally minutes after posting I figured it out. Clearly I needed to embarrass myself by making a public complaint first. Edited review in case it helps someone coming after: It does sleep. The thing that was preventing it sleeping, in my case, was CleanMyMacX, which generally speaking is a good thing, but either its menubar utility or the health monitor daemon was prodding the disk frequently enough to keep it awake. I'd forgotten about it until I ejected then remounted the disk and it offered to delete the trash on it. Disable background monitoring and quit all CleanMyMacX processes, and after a reasonable delay, the drive went to sleep just fine. Watch out for other similar utilities/processes that might be doing that kind of background monitoring, like antivirus tools, etc. At some point I'll get back to trying to figure out how to have CMMX working but not keeping that drive awake, for the time being, it's just disabled entirely. As that was the only problem I was having, added a star to the rating.
Review: Excellent - Excellent so far. Doing its job at the moment. I hope it continues, and if it does, I will be over the moon.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Fast and works well with M1 Apple Mac Mini
*by S***Y on 14 February 2022*

I've been looking for a SSD based storage box to replace my SAN for some time but the cost was just too high so I bought this instead as a stop gap. 10TB is reasonable amount of storage but there are two things which have surprised me.Firstly it works really well with Apple Mac Mini (and therefore probably all Macs) - I don't get those annoying errors saying the device wasn't ejected properly - regardless of if I reboot the Mac or use the sleep function, the drive is available and connected when the Mac comes to life, no errors or delays.Secondly the speed ! It's much faster than any other external hard drive I've had. My Mac Mini has a Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port being an M1 Mac Mini and although this drive doesn't support USB4 or Thunderbolt connections, it does enable it to run at full 10Gbit/s of USB 3.2 gen 2, which is the same headline speed at 10Gbit Ethernet, which is not really directly comparable, but does mean the the interface is never going to be the limiting factor, the speed limiter will be the disk and Lacie have fitted a fast disk which is giving me well over 220 MBytes/s read and write mixed file sizes. This is impressive for a spinning disk.Given the speed, the price and the build quality which is great (and I can't hear a fan) this is very good value for money.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Sleek, silent and blazingly fast
*by I***L on 8 April 2021*

I bought this as an upgrade from an 8TB (raided to 4TB) 2Big RAID from LaCie so I was already sold on the construction and styling. My HDD had just under 2TB of images, video and sounds and the HDD was too slow. I knew this would be faster, but was still pleasantly surprised at the leap to SSD speeds.Since I have cloud backup I'm not fussed about RAID and so just wanted speed.Good things:- speed. Really. It's fast.- connectivity - one power, couple of USB, display port... that's all of the gubbins at the back. Plug and play on a Mac.- USB, CF and SSD on the front - accessible- nice design.- small footprint - it's 1/3 the size of my HDD- gloriously SILENT! After years of HDD fans, this is really welcome.Cons- price (although I bought mine at 50% off on Amazon, so more palatable!)- can't expand storage - it is 2TB and will always be 2TB.This isn't for everyone but if you're in the market for a desk-based SSD that is fast, can work as a hub or media in/out/process centre, and which is stylish and silent, then I'd recommend it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good but...
*by G***0 on 28 June 2025*

A good robust LaCie HD designed to last years but... be careful how you connect to a Mac Sequoia or earlier OS or any Mac for that matter. I purchased my first one December last year but a couple of weeks ago it failed to boot up with the Mac. Un-plugin and re plugin either the power cable of the port cable seemed to work but then after some time it would disappear from Disk Utility. Amazon very kindly replaced and the new one arrived overnight. Surprise surprise the new one behaved the same way! Rather than send that one back I began to jiggle around cables and ports as I have extension ports galore like most of us. Finally I hit on a combination that worked. In essence connect it directly to a port on the Mac itself. It doesn't like extension ports unlike all the other LaCie drives I have (6 in all) which seem happy to churn away on whatever port they are connected to. The power cable in the end would seem ok. Hope that helps.
