Unfortunately, It does leak out under the join and onto the floor. There needs to be some sort of sealer around the join. In saying that, it is not as bad as having no lid. **Q: Does it contain smells at all ?** A: Think up to a point does contain smell, there again our cats use their tray at a regular time, and trays are cleaned immediately so hard to give a definite answer. I have two trays, each cat has its own tray. The trays do help contain the cat litter being flicked all over floor. They are a good size for especially Main Coon cats. **Q: How much litter do you need to put in the litter box?** A: I find when i put less litter in they track less through the house but are still able to hide their output at the back of the litter tray.
