Review: For SERIOUS BAKERS only - love this banneton - Purchased Round/Groove banneton and it was well worth the cost! This has lived up to all the hype and none of my Sourdough loaves have stuck to the banneton --- each one has just popped right out. I've only "lightly" floured the inside and actually don't think you need to use flour and no tea towel needed. I will certainly purchase another. Easy to clean.
Review: THIS is what you want! - I've baked bread, rolls, and pizza crust for many years. None of my recipes were that fancy, but it's all stuff that my family loved. I had never heard of a banneton until I decided to look into another French bread recipe and the recipe suggested using a banneton. Quickly, I ended up down the rabbit hole and then I started researching sourdough. I got my starter ready & started looking for accessories. I'm not skilled on working dough to the extent that some of these recipes ask for. After doing some research, I decided a wood pulp proofing basket would probably fit my skill-set better than rattan. Although you need to season a rattan basket, I still saw online posts where people still had sticking with the floured rattan baskets. I am newly retired and I'm trying to find a good balance between an affordable hobby with some cheaper items and some items of better quality. After reading reviews of the cheaper branded wood pulp baskets, it wasn't clear where the wood pulp originated and I saw reviews mentioning how thin the bowls were. Furthermore, I preferred to stay with desertcart in case I had an issue with the quality or size since I'm very new to this hobby. I decided that I should put a bit more money into my proofing bowls and I went with Bulka. I purchased 2 of the round 9" bowls. I had a couple of concerns prior to using them so I emailed Bulka directly. We went back and forth a few times. They were VERY quick to respond and detailed with their replies. Although I hadn't started using the bowls yet, I knew that I made a good choice. This week, I used my sourdough starter for the first time on 2 loaves of sourdough leavened bread. I did a quick brush out of my 2 new Bulka bowls, and then sprinkled rice flour inside, prior to adding my dough. I covered both bowls with plastic and put them in the refrigerator for about 24 hours due to being too busy to bake the loaves. The next day, I EASILY dumped both loaves onto my countertop. There was ZERO sticking. They plopped right out. Both loaves turned out very well being baked in my Dutch oven. The crust was chewy, with a bit of crisp to it. The crumb turned out very well. My husband who isn't a huge bread eater couldn't stop saying how good the bread turned out. I'm very pleased that I put out a few extra dollars for Bulka. Although I live in the desert, I did leave both bowls out to "dry" and they both came with heavy duty cardboard boxes for easy, clean storage. For those having sticking issues, my research has shown that your dough was much too wet and not ready for proofing yet. Also, those having mold issues. Wood pulp bowls CANNOT be washed or have water put into them. This is ALL wood pulp bowls, regardless of brand. It's important to research what you want ahead of time to keep your bowls working, and in good condition. A recently heated, but turned off oven can be used to dry them after use. The reason why some prefer wood pulp proofing bowls is because they pull moisture out of the dough prior to baking. And I've discovered that Bulka bowls do this very well due the great crust of my first 2 loaves! I've included several pictures. One shows the dough before putting the bowls into the refrigerator for 24 hours. The other picture shows the first loaf I pulled out of the refrigerator, 24 hours later.

## Features

- SIZED FOR 1KG BREADS: This 9" round sourdough proofing basket supports your dough through its final rise so it holds its shape and turns out beautifully domed. Ideal for sourdough boules and other artisan loaves. A thoughtful gift for bakers and a lasting addition to your sourdough bread baking supplies.
- THICK WALLS FOR EVEN FERMENTATION: The dense wood pulp walls of this brotform insulate your dough and hold proofing temperature steady, for even fermentation and a reliable rise even in a cooler kitchen. A bread rising basket you can count on.
- CRISP, CRACKLY CRUST: The porous spruce wood pulp draws excess moisture off the dough as it proofs, leaving a drier surface that scores easily and bakes into a thin, crackly crust.
- EASY RELEASE: Doughs with good gluten development release from this sourdough proofing basket with just a light dusting of flour. For very wet or no-knead doughs, or ones with wet inclusions like olives or dried fruit, use a linen liner / kitchen towel.
- NO ADDED BINDERS, HANDMADE IN GERMANY: Crafted from sustainably sourced spruce wood pulp, bound by its own natural lignin, unlike grass or paper pulp baskets that rely on artificial binders. To clean, dry with residual oven heat at 210 to 250°F for 30 min, then brush off the flour. Don't wash with water.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Why does my dough cling to my banneton like a toddler to their favorite toy?**
A: Dough sticks when the banneton isn’t floured enough. Dust it generously with flour (gluten-free flour works best) to ensure a clean release and a perfect shape.

**Q: Do I need a PhD to clean my banneton?**
A: Definitely not! After each use, brush off excess flour and ensure it dries completely—moisture invites mold. Drying in the oven with residual heat at 250°F is the gold standard for keeping your banneton clean and mold-free! Never wash it with water!

**Q: Is my Bulka banneton made of cardboard?**
A: Nope, it’s crafted from premium, food-safe wood pulp! Unlike cardboard, wood pulp is durable, breathable, and perfect for proofing dough. It helps regulate moisture for better results, giving your bread that perfect crust and shape every time.

**Q: What happens when my Bulka banneton decides to start a mushroom farm?**
A: Mold thrives in moisture! Always dry your banneton completely after use, ideally using the oven's residual heat, and store it in a well-ventilated spot. If mold does form, it's best to dispose of the basket to keep your baking safe and hygienic.

**Q: I live in humid climate, and/or my dough proofs in the fridge. Any tips for my banneton?**
A: Moisture is the enemy! Always ensure your banneton is thoroughly dried after each use. The residual heat method is the best basket's friend. Then store it in a dry and well-ventilated area—this is crucial to prevent mold and keep it bake-ready!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's this one. This is the one you want.
*by A***S on August 13, 2025*

If you're looking for a banneton (bread proofing basket), this is the one you're looking for. Choose whichever shape and pattern you want, but Bulka is 100% the quality and construction of banneton you're after. All of the usual praises are in order for the exceptional packaging, shipping, all of that good stuff - but the product itself, typical for German quality, is outstanding. Proofing in it is a breeze - I have had zero sticking, cleanup is a breeze, just a light flouring and you're off to the races. It's beautiful, it's quality, it's sustainable, it's German, and it proofs an exquisite loaf at a reasonable price for the quality. Stop looking and researching (I do so obsessively). This is your final stop. Click the buy button and spend more time enjoying a beautifully simple and fulfilling way to make your own food. Thank you Bulka for making something excellent in a world full of garbage.
