I change it approx. every 2-3 months. Keep in mind I have 4 of them in there at one time in stage 1. For fish tanks, I am not sure. **Q: Why does it say " ; Use carefully when keeping live plants" in the last sentence above where the benefits are listed at the top?** A: Carbon can absorb the plant food & leave plants malnourished Your live plants should do a good job of filtering your water. It's up to you , use carbon or substitute other filter media in your filter system. There is pro & con . **Q: Are the particles large enough to take out of the bag? i have a small tom filter and they no longer make the cartidges, so i just need a small amount** A: Hi: This is a subjective question. They come in a mesh bag, something similar to the screen in a coffee pot. Not the filter, the screen. I would describe them as about 1/2 the size of an okra seed. It is ground to a consistent size, definitely not a powder or the size of a flake of black pepper. Not that small. About the size of a small pebble of sand, much smaller I would call a grain of sand. I hope this helps. **Q: I have a fluval 406 canister filter any want who recomended me this product to keep the water clean?? Or any good product for a turtle tank??** A: Fluvals are the best. I use it plus a over the top fluval to keep the top of the water clean. They're expensive but cannot imagine a better product for turtles.
